LETTER FROM A CONCERNED CITIZEN TO SLAJ

Date: Thursday, March 30, 2023 It is interesting to read what the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists wrote regarding Chief Mohamed Gento Kamara's speech. I have watched and listened to it numerous times, and I could not find any reason for Chief Mohamed Gento Kamara to have been thought of as areligious extremist or fanatic. For what I know as a Sierra Leonean, the mayoral candidates have always been the Croel, who are Christians, and he is calling for a change to find out how another religious group would do. It is very easy to misconstrue his message. Religious topics have always been very sensitive subjects. If you take a look at the Freetown Municipality, chapter 65, section 2:Constitution and Government of the City, line 3, it states: The City of Freetown is here by declared to be a Municipal City, and the inhabitants thereof a body corporate, bearing the corporate name of the "Mayor, Aldermen, Councilors, and Citizens of Freetown." This ensures that the mayoral position is open to all citizens. We ought to be careful when we listen to candidates speeches. I understand no one is perfect, but it would have been nice for SLAJ to have carefully listen to Chief Mohamed Gento Kamara's speech. I believe there are plenty of qualified people in Sierra Leone for the other candidate to have only selected someone who represents her ethnicity and religious beliefs. Is this a double standard? I am not saying the person she chose is not qualified, but would it not be nice to see someone from a different ethnicity or religious affiliation? Before inciting such things among our people, it would be better to also question the other side.

 Sincerely,
 Mohamed Conteh
